What’s the Scale-up Worker Visa

The Scale-up Worker visa is a relatively new route (launched August 2022) for skilled workers joining high-growth UK businesses. The sponsoring company must be endorsed by the Home Office as a genuine scale-up, meaning it's demonstrated at least 20% annual growth in either revenue or staffing over a 3-year period. Your role must be skilled (RQF Level 6, degree level) and pay at least £39,100 per year.

The big selling point is freedom after the initial sponsored period. After your first 6 months of employment with the scale-up sponsor, you're free to change employers, take on additional work, or even become self-employed, all without needing a new visa or sponsor. When it's time to extend after 2 years, you don't need a new certificate of sponsorship either. You just need to prove you earned at least £36,300 per year for at least half of your most recent stay.

For Concord clients, the Scale-up visa is a strong option if you're joining a fast-growing UK company and value long-term flexibility. It's one of the few sponsored routes that gives you genuine job mobility, and it leads to ILR after 5 years.

Who is it for?

The Scale-up Worker visa is designed for high-skilled professionals joining endorsed UK companies that are growing fast. Think Series A+ startups, rapidly expanding tech firms, and high-growth businesses across sectors like fintech, healthtech, and clean energy. Your role needs to be at degree level (RQF Level 6) and pay at least £39,100 per year.

It's a strong fit for people who want the security of a sponsored visa but don't want to be locked into one employer forever. If you value career flexibility, the option to switch jobs, freelance, or take on side projects without reapplying for a visa, Scale-up gives you that after just 6 months. It's still a fairly new route, so fewer employers know about it, but it's one of the most founder-friendly sponsored visas in the UK system.
