What’s the SC 186 Visa

The Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) visa is Australia's main pathway to permanent residence through employer sponsorship. It grants you and your family permanent residence, including access to Medicare and the right to live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely. There are two main streams: Direct Entry (DE) and Temporary Residence Transition (TRT).

The Direct Entry stream is for workers applying directly for permanent residence. You'll need a positive skills assessment, IELTS 6.0 in each band, at least 3 years of relevant experience, and to be under 45 years of age. The TRT stream is for workers who've already been on a 482 or 457 visa for at least 2 years with the same employer, no separate skills assessment is required, which makes it the more straightforward pathway for most Concord clients.

Both streams require the employer to nominate the worker for a genuine, ongoing, full-time position on the CSOL, with a salary meeting the Core Skills Income Threshold ($76,515/year), and a genuine need for the position. Concord manages the full process, from assessing which stream suits your situation to lodging the nomination and visa application.

Who is it for?

The SC 186 is for skilled workers who want to make Australia their permanent home through employer sponsorship. If you've been working for your employer on a 482 or 457 visa for at least 2 years, the TRT stream is your most straightforward path to PR, no separate skills assessment required. You just need to meet the English and character requirements.

The Direct Entry stream suits workers who haven't been on a 482 but meet all the requirements upfront: a positive skills assessment, 3 years of experience, IELTS 6.0, and be under 45. It's also ideal for employers who want to attract top international talent with an immediate permanent residence offer, a powerful recruitment tool in competitive markets.

What are the requirements

01

Eligible occupation on CSOL

The nominated position must be on the Core Skills Occupations List. For TRT stream, it must be the same or closely related role as your 482 visa.

02

Age requirement (under 45)

You must be under 45 years of age at the time of application. Some exemptions may apply for certain circumstances, check with your agent.

03

English language (IELTS 6.0)

You need competent English, IELTS 6.0 in each band (or equivalent). This applies to both Direct Entry and TRT streams.

04

Skills assessment (DE stream)

For Direct Entry stream, you must have a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority (e.g., VETASSESS, ACS). Not required for TRT stream.
