The Post-Graduation Work Permit is one of Canada's most valuable immigration tools for international students. After completing an eligible programme at a designated learning institution (DLI), you can obtain an open work permit that lets you work for any employer, in any occupation, anywhere in Canada, no job offer required. The permit length matches your programme: 2-year programmes get 3-year PGWPs, and programmes between 8 months and 2 years get permits matching the study duration. Master's graduates (regardless of programme length) are now eligible for 3-year permits.
As of November 2024, new eligibility requirements apply: you must provide proof of language proficiency (CLB 7 for degree graduates, CLB 5 for non-degree), and non-degree graduates must have studied in an eligible field of study. You need to apply within 180 days of receiving confirmation that you've completed your programme, and your study permit must have been valid at some point during those 180 days.
Strategically, the PGWP is a launchpad for permanent residency. Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP is worth significant CRS points in Express Entry and can qualify you for the Canadian Experience Class. Many international students use their PGWP years to build the work experience and connections needed for a successful PR application. Concord helps graduates plan their PGWP-to-PR pathway from the start.
Who is it for?
The PGWP is for international students who have completed a full-time programme of at least 8 months at an eligible Canadian designated learning institution. You're eligible whether you completed a certificate, diploma, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral programme, as long as it meets the DLI and field-of-study requirements. You must have maintained full-time student status throughout your studies.
It's particularly valuable for students who came to Canada specifically to build a career and eventually gain permanent residency. If you're a recent graduate trying to figure out your next immigration step, the PGWP gives you breathing room and the chance to accumulate the Canadian work experience that makes PR applications much stronger. It's also relevant for graduates considering entrepreneurship, the open nature of the permit means you can start a business or freelance while on it.
