What’s the SC 400 Visa

The Subclass 400 (Temporary Work - Short Stay Specialist) visa is designed for overseas workers who need to come to Australia for short-term, highly specialised work. It's the right choice when you need someone with specific skills or knowledge that aren't readily available in the Australian workforce, and the work is genuinely temporary and non-ongoing.

The visa is typically granted for up to 3 months, though in limited or exceptional circumstances it can extend to 6 months. Unlike the SC 482, the employer doesn't need to be an approved Standard Business Sponsor to support this visa. However, you will need to demonstrate that the work is specialised, temporary, and that suitable Australian workers aren't available.

This visa is commonly used for specialist consultants, technicians flying in for equipment installations, executives attending short-term projects, or professionals conducting training. Processing is fast, most applications are decided within 2-4 weeks.

Who is it for?

The SC 400 is ideal for overseas specialists who need to work in Australia on a short-term basis, think consultants, technicians, trainers, or executives involved in specific projects. It's the right visa when the work is genuinely temporary (under 6 months) and requires skills or knowledge that aren't readily available in the Australian workforce.

It's also a good option for businesses that need to fly in specialists for equipment installations, technical troubleshooting, training delivery, or short-term advisory work. If the engagement is longer-term or ongoing, the SC 482 is likely a better fit.

What are the requirements

01

Specialised skills or knowledge

You must possess specialist skills, knowledge, or experience that are not readily available in the Australian workforce.

02

Non-ongoing work

The work must be genuinely temporary and expected to be completed within 6 months or less. You cannot extend this visa for ongoing roles.

03

Employer support letter

Your employer (Australian or international) must provide a contract or letter supporting your application and demonstrating the need for your specialist skills.

04

Health and character checks

You must meet health requirements (medical examination) and character requirements (police clearances from countries where you've lived 12+ months since age 16).
