The E-3 visa is Australia's special deal with the United States. Created under the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement, it's essentially a faster, simpler version of the H-1B, exclusively for Australian citizens.
The E-3 has an annual cap of 10,500 visas, but it's never come close to being filled. That means no lottery stress. The application process is also more straightforward: your employer gets a certified Labor Condition Application (LCA), and you apply directly at a US consulate. Many Australians walk out of their consular interview with an approved visa the same day.
Like the H-1B, the E-3 requires a job in a specialty occupation and at least a bachelor's degree. But unlike the H-1B, it's renewable indefinitely in 2-year increments, and your spouse gets automatic work authorisation. It's one of the best-kept secrets in US immigration.
Who is it for?
The E-3 is exclusively for Australian citizens who have a US job offer in a specialty occupation. If you're an Australian software engineer, data scientist, product manager, consultant, financial analyst, or any professional whose role typically requires a bachelor's degree, the E-3 is almost certainly your best option.
It's also a great stepping stone. Many Australian founders use the E-3 to get to the US, build their career, and then transition to an O-1A or green card as their profile grows. Because it's renewable indefinitely, you're never on a ticking clock.
