The Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) visa is a points-tested permanent residence visa for skilled workers who want to live and work in Australia without any sponsorship. No employer, no state or territory government, no family member needs to sponsor you. If you have the right skills, qualifications, and enough points, you can apply independently through the SkillSelect system.
To be eligible, you need a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, a minimum of 65 points on the points test (though competitive scores are typically 85-95+ depending on your occupation), and competent English (IELTS 6.0 in each band or equivalent). The points test considers factors like age, English proficiency, work experience, qualifications, and partner skills. The process starts with an Expression of Interest (EOI) submitted through SkillSelect, and invitations are issued in quarterly rounds based on occupation ceilings and points rankings.
Once granted, the SC 189 gives you and your family permanent residence with no geographic or employment restrictions. You can live, work, and study anywhere in Australia, access Medicare, and eventually apply for Australian citizenship. Concord helps you assess your points score, manage the skills assessment process, and prepare a strong EOI and visa application.
Who is it for?
The SC 189 is for skilled professionals who have the qualifications, work experience, and English proficiency to score competitively on the points test without needing employer or state sponsorship. It's popular with IT professionals, engineers, accountants, healthcare workers, and tradespeople whose occupations are on the skilled occupation list.
It's also a strong option for people already in Australia on temporary visas (such as student or 482 visas) who want to transition to permanent residence independently. If you prefer not to be tied to a specific employer or location, the 189 gives you complete flexibility from the moment it's granted.
What are the requirements
Occupation on skilled list
Your occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list. Each occupation has a designated assessing authority (e.g., ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering, VETASSESS for professional roles).
Points test (minimum 65)
You must score at least 65 points on the points test, though competitive invitations typically require 85-95+ points depending on your occupation and the invitation round.
English language (IELTS 6.0+)
Competent English (IELTS 6.0 in each band or equivalent) is the minimum. Higher English scores (7.0 or 8.0) earn additional points on the points test.
Positive skills assessment
You must obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation before submitting your Expression of Interest.
